Torquay Pottery, A Local Story.

81 pages; 470 colour photographs of individual pots

This book was created as a catalogue to accompany an exhibition of Torquay pottery organised by the Torquay Pottery Collectors Society in conjunction with the Society’s 25th Anniversary celebrations.

The exhibition brought “together a wide range of South Devon pottery to show the variety of styles produced for the ever changing tastes of Victorians and Edwardians and how the artistic movements of the Aesthetic and Art nouveau filtered down from Paris and London to influence the patterns and decorations used by these ‘local  potters.’

The exhibition display was arranged in chronological sequence within the Newton Abbot Town Museum.  A time-line frieze above the exhibits traced both significant historical and artistic events.  The catalogue contains excellent photographs of all the pots in the exhibition  together with complete descriptions as to pottery and approximate date of manufacture.

The catalogue includes a history of the Torquay and South Devon potteries compiled from the numerous books published by the Society and from the Society’s magazine over the previous 25 years.

The combination of the exhibition photographs with the history narrative make this publication far more than a simple exhibition catalogue.  Rather it forms a reference work which every Torquay collector should possess.
